Cultural longing

You can have a longing

for a country

like a longing for a person;

like the smell of warm, baked bread

and a smiling face

behind an apron,

the comfort of good conversation,

the reassuring taste of strong coffee grounds

that tickle the roof of your mouth,

invigorating your uvula

as it flows down to warm your heart

and enliven your thoughts.

You can have a longing

for a language—

a path into the universe

of a collective soul

that, when no longer heard,

leaves you feeling abandoned

in a silent, alien world.
